Internationally established university with 160 years of history

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an internationally established university with 160 years of history that is rooted in the Bauhaus tradition. It combines science, technology, art and design. This approach determines the self-image of the faculties of Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art and Design and Media. In addition to their subject-specific functions, the faculties are also committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and to the interpenetration between art, science and practice.

The Faculty of Art and Design at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is seeking to fill the

Professorship (W3) »Interface Design«

as soon as possible.

We are looking for a both domestically and internationally recognised artistic personality who, based on his or her previous professional practice and scientific expertise, is distinguished by outstanding professional competence in the development, implementation and communication of innovative human-machine interfaces and who will contribute these to teaching and research at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, with particular emphasis on media and technological approaches.

The Interface Design Professorship is responsible for teaching and research in the field of interface design and cooperates with the Professorships of Media Art/Media Design as well as with adjacent professorships and study programmes of the faculty. In addition, it builds a bridge between the media informatics courses offered by the Faculty of Media and the MediaArchitecture degree programme at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism.

Accordingly, the holder of the Interface Design Professorship shall further develop the subject to its full extent, focusing on artistic or creative competencies and skills in the field of interface design and the (digital) forms of development and application based on it.

The tasks of the Professorship include in particular:

  • the artistic, creative and technological development, mediation and design of human-machine interfaces
  • the design of interfaces as tools of selection and action in the sense of basic, current cultural techniques
  • the teaching of artistic or design and technological basics for the development and implementation of processes, products and services in the field of interface design, including physical computing, API, networking, prototyping and front-end
  • the development and implementation of novel, interdisciplinary teaching and project formats on essential aspects of Interface Design, from the concept to the real demonstrator
  • the further development and foundation of the subject area in a national and international context as well as the establishment of the corresponding teaching and research cooperations
  • the supervision of graduation and qualification work in the field of Interface Design with a focus on artistic or design and technological processes
  • the support and further development of existing laboratory and development environments

We are looking for a person who is capable of combining disciplinary excellence with an openness to other subject cultures and who is engaged in the further development and shaping of the university. As a result, we expect further development of inter-faculty cooperation and interdisciplinary study programs.

A relevant university degree, special qualifications for artistic and/or scientific work, which must be proven by a classical or practice-based doctorate or by achievements appropriate to a doctorate, as well as subject-related pedagogical aptitude, proven by teaching experience in a university context are a must. At the same time, we expect cross-disciplinary, artistic/creative activities with a presence in the public domain of the discipline (publications/exhibitions/conferences/festivals) and third-party funded project work. Several years of practical experience outside of the university sector is a plus. It is expected that courses will also be held in English, so active participation in existing doctoral programmes and involvement in university self-administration and, in particular, in the Media Art/Media Design study programmes is expected.

The conditions of employment are defined in § 84 of the Thuringian Higher Education Act (Thüringer Hochschulgesetz). If these requirements are met, the successful candidate who fills the full-time position will be employed as a civil servant (Beamter).

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar pursues an equal-opportunity, family-friendly human resources policy. The university’s strategic goals include increasing the proportion of women in teaching and research. The university was awarded a »TOTAL E-QUALITY« rating, and was given the title of »Gleichstellung: Ausgezeichnet!« (»Gender Equality: Outstanding!«) under the Federal Government-Countries Women Professors Programme. Bauhaus-Universität Weimar would therefore like to expressly invite qualified female scholars and academics to submit applications. People with disabilities will receive preferential treatment if other qualifications are equivalent.
